The continuing floods in 12 districts have harmed at least 462 kilometers of roads under the jurisdiction of the Roads and Highways Department (RHD), according to preliminary reports from the department.
In these places, 111 highways had disruptions between August 20 and 22, according to RHD officials.
There are 90.63 kilometers of national highways, 52.88 kilometers of regional highways, and 318.70 kilometers of district roads among the impacted roadways.
Several districts are impacted, including Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachari, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Cumilla, Feni, Noakhali, and Lakshmipur.
They said that after a final report is prepared, the damage can get worse.
The report claims that numerous highways have been submerged by excessive rains and water pouring from upstream sources, and that portions of other roads have been carried away by powerful currents. The floodwaters have also caused potholes to form on a number of highways.
The cancellation of the leaves of all officials and workers at RHD field offices in the flood-affected districts was announced by Zikrul Hassan, the superintending engineer (maintenance circle) of RHD.
“Our efforts to maintain the road network’s usability are intense. After the floodwaters subside, the entire magnitude of the destruction will become apparent,” he continued.
