Sudanese volunteer rescuers reported that shelling in the greater Khartoum area has claimed at least 120 lives, as the conflict between the army and paramilitary forces intensifies across the country.
The “random shelling” on Monday in western Omdurman, Khartoum’s twin city across the Nile River, resulted in the deaths of 120 civilians, according to the Ombada Emergency Response Room, a network of volunteer rescuers.
This figure is described as an “initial toll,” with no clarification on who was responsible for the attack.
Rescuers also reported severe shortages of medical supplies as health workers struggled to treat a large number of wounded individuals, who sustained varying degrees of injuries from the shelling.
Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a war between rival generals competing for control. Most of Omdurman is under army control, while the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) hold Khartoum North and other parts of the capital.
