PM Sheikh Hasina arrived in Johannesburg to attend the 15th BRICS Summit on 22-24 August, hosted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The summit is the first since the Covid-19 pandemic and global restrictions.
The prime minister will deliver a speech at the “Bangladesh Trade and Business Summit” and attend the “Bangladesh Envoys Conference” organized by Bangladesh ambassadors stationed in African countries.
She will also hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President XI Jinping at the Hotel Hilton Sandton. She will also hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the summit and meet Bangladeshi expatriates living in South Africa.
Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen stated that nearly 22 countries have shown interest in becoming members of BRICS, and the five original members are trying to reach a consensus.
Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to leave Johannesburg for Dhaka on 26 August and return home on 27 August after a brief stopover at Dubai International Airport.
