The Teesta River has increased in level due to the onrush of upstream water and heavy rains, submerging the low-lying areas in the Lalmonirhat district. As a result, the Water Development Board (WDB) opened all 44 of the Teesta Barrage gates.
On Friday afternoon, the local Water Development Board measured a 51.83 cm water flow at Teesta Barrage Point.
Muhammad Rashedin, deputy engineer of the Water Development Board (WDB) Dalia point, reported that the Teesta was flowing below the danger level, but the rise in water level prompted the opening of all 44 barrage gates.
However, the recent days of intense rainfall have caused the river to swell, seriously eroding the Teesta’s banks.
130 millimetres of rain fell in a day, until Friday afternoon, according to the Local Weather Observatory Centre in Rangpur.
Hossain Ali, a local of Char Gaddimari, claims that the district’s roads flooded in various areas due to the rising water levels of all the rivers, frightening the locals about a flash flood.
According to Ziaul Haque Zia, acting chairman of the Gaddimari union in Hatibandha upazila, there has been torrential rainfall over the past two days, and UNB reports that some low-lying areas and roads have flooded.
