The 53rd convocation of Dhaka University, the country’s oldest university, began today at noon. Graduates dressed for convocation have been flocking to the campus since morning and are photographed with their classmates, friends, and teachers.
Colorful banners, festoons, placards, and arches have adorned the university campus. The chancellor of this topmost educational institution, President Abdul Hamid, has already arrived at the convocation site.
The program’s convocation speaker is Nobel Laureate French Economist Dr. Jean Tirole. On the occasion, he will be awarded an honorary doctorate. DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Md Akhtaruzzaman stated that 30,348 graduates and researchers would attend the convocation.
Graduates from seven DU-affiliated colleges will also participate in the convocation ceremony via video conferencing from Dhaka College and Eden Mohila College.
153 gold medals, 97 Ph.D., 2 DBA, and 35 MPhil degrees will be awarded this time. On February 22, 1923, the DU held its first convocation.
