An eight-year-old girl, who was reportedly raped in Magura, has passed away while receiving treatment at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.
Doctors pronounced her dead at approximately 1:00 pm today, Thursday.
Professor Colonel Nazmul Hamid from CMH’s pediatric neurology department confirmed the news to Prothom Alo.
According to Colonel Nazmul Hamid, the child suffered two more cardiac arrests this morning, causing her heart to stop. Despite being revived twice through cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), she experienced another cardiac arrest around 12:00 pm. This time, efforts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful, and she was declared dead at around 1:00 pm.
Previously, she had been on life support in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at CMH. On Wednesday, she suffered four cardiac arrests while undergoing treatment, as stated by the Bangladesh Army.
A high-level medical board comprising expert physicians at CMH was overseeing her care.
As per the army’s statement, her heart had stopped four times on Wednesday but was revived each time through CPR. She was also undergoing dialysis due to an electrolyte imbalance, and her blood pressure remained critically low at 60/40 mm Hg or lower.
The child’s mother has filed a case accusing multiple individuals of rape. Her brother-in-law, along with his parents and elder brother, has been arrested and placed on remand in connection with the case.
A Magura court has granted a seven-day remand for the father-in-law and five-day remands for the husband, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law.
The child was initially taken to Magura 250-bed Hospital in an unconscious state at around 11:30 am last Thursday by her sister’s mother-in-law. Later that afternoon, she was transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital and subsequently moved to Dhaka Medical College Hospital that night.
She was placed on life support on Friday night before being transferred to CMH on Saturday evening for further critical care.
