Beginning on Monday, the national grid transmission line will receive an additional eight million cubic feet (mmcf) of gas from the Beanibazar Gas Field, somewhat alleviating the nation’s chronic gas crisis.
After performing a workover on an abandoned well in the Beanibazar field earlier this month, Sylhet Gas Fields Limited found a brand-new gas deposit.
Sunday, Sylhet Gas Fields General Manager Abdul Jalil Pramanik addressed reporters at the gas field “On Sunday afternoon, we finished testing well 1 in its entirety. The gas pressure in well 1 has been tested, and all technical preparations for gas supply to the national grid are now complete.”
Supply to the national grid transmission line will begin Monday morning, he continued, “if everything goes as planned.”
The national transmission lines currently receive seven mmcf of gas per day from well 2 in the Beanibazar gas field, which Sylhet Gas Fields runs.
The Sylhet Gas Fields’ sources state that gas extraction from well 1 began in 1991 and ended in 2014. The well was again declared closed in 2016 after gas extraction had resumed.
On September 10, SGFL’s contractor, Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) started drilling again in well 1. On November 10, a month later, Sylhet Gas Fields formally acknowledged the newly established reserve.
Mizanur Rahman, the managing director of Sylhet Gas Fields, said, “At a depth of 3,254 meters, the well currently holds a reserve of more than 70 billion cubic feet of gas. The well can supply up to 10–12 million cubic feet of gas per day, according to the pressure test.”
“However, eight million cubic feet of gas will still be extracted each day for the time being due to technological considerations. Additionally, 125 to 130 barrels of gas condensate are anticipated to be produced daily, ” he added.
The managing director stated, “After fresh gas was discovered in this well, the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources urged us to complete all the testing work and begin supply as soon as feasible.
“In addition, a three-dimensional seismic survey is being conducted in various Sylhet neighborhoods, including Beanibazar. Through this survey, there is a good chance of discovering additional gas reserves, “He continued, noting that the workover of 46 ancient wells by all gas companies in the nation is expected to enhance the gas supply by around 618 mmcf by the year 2025.
The Sylhet Gas Fields Limited is in charge of five gas fields: the Haripur, Rashidpur, Chhatak, Kailashtila, and Beanibazar.
Chhatak field is one of them, while the remaining fields’ 12 wells are currently turning out 91 million cubic feet of gas per day.
Currently, 20 of the country’s 28 gas fields that have been discovered are producing 2,206.5mmcf of gas per day.
The country is now supplying 2,586.6mmcf of gas per day with LNG imports, although the daily demand for gas is between 3,400 and 3,500mmcf.
