Nine people and one institution received the Swadhinata Padak from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today in honor of their great services to the nation. The ceremony to present the highest civilian honor took place at the capital’s Osmani Memorial Auditorium.
For their contributions to Bangladesh’s independence and the Liberation War in 1971, freedom fighters Colonel Shamsul Alam (retired), Lieutenant AG Mohammad Khurshid (posthumous), martyred Khwaja Nizamuddin Bhuiyan, and Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya earned the award.
The award was given to Begum Nadira Jahan (Surma Zahid), winner of the Bangla Academy, and Dr. Firdausi Qadri, acting senior director of the ICDDRB, for their contributions to research and training. For his literary contributions, late Mohammad Moinuddin Ahmed (Selim Al Deen) was awarded the honor.
For their contributions to culture and sports, respectively, Pabitra Mohan Dey and ASM Raqibul Hasan were given the award. In the public service category, the Department of Fire Service and Civil Defense was presented with the award.
