Throughout Thursday night and early Friday, eight more people were detained in relation to assaults on the Ahmadiyya community in Panchagarh. The total number of arrestees now stands at 173.
The incident was premeditated, and a group of skilled cadres who were armed with deadly weapons attacked the Ahmadiyya community, said police.
In an altercation on March 3 between law enforcement and supporters of Islamist organizations protesting against the Ahmadiyya community and demanding the cancellation of the three-day Jalsa Salana, an annual gathering of Ahmadiyya people, at least 30 people were hurt, including seven police officers, and two people died.
Many of the community members’ homes and four shops were set on fire by the agitators. They also attacked police cars, a traffic police office, and a local police station. According to police, 16 cases have been filed concerning the attacks: 13 with Panchagarh Police Station and 3 with Boda Police Station.
