Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal stated on Thursday that the upcoming national election’s validity will fall to zero if major political parties do not run candidates.
During a press conference held in his office, the CEC added that the largest obstacle to a free and fair election is the current political crisis.
There won’t be a legality crisis, but the election’s legitimacy will plummet, he claimed, if the major political parties abstain. To end the ongoing political situation, he asked the two largest political parties to hold negotiations.
Regardless of whether electronic voting machines or paper ballots are used, he added that it is impossible to guarantee 100% free and fair elections. Yet if EVM is used, Habibul argued, the election is secure.
