Through involvement in sheep herding and vegetable farming, char dwellers are progressively becoming independent.
According to sources, FRIENDSHIP, a renowned non-government organization that has been working for char dwellers of the district for over 20 years, took the initiative to provide seeds of various vegetables to 210 char dwellers of the district so that the beneficiaries could be financially stable. The char land and environment here are very suitable for vegetable and sheep farming.
As a result, under the Assistance for Sustainable Development (ASD) Project funded by Luxembourg FRIENDSHIP, FRIENDSHIP distributed quality seed of various vegetables and high breed ship to the chosen char dwellers of Kamarjani union of Sadar upazila, Erendabari union of Fulchhari union, and Horipur and Kapasia unions of Sundarganj upazilas of the district.
Prior to this, the ASD project within the Climate Action Sector provided the recipients with basic instruction on successful sheep and vegetable production.
After acquiring project assets, the beneficiaries focused on growing vegetables on their own homesteads and raising sheep on char land under the direct supervision of the project officials, and they were successful.
The beneficiaries are now making money from raising sheep and growing vegetables, and they have also begun to improve their socioeconomic situation.
A female beneficiary of Char Motherbari in Horipur union of Sundarganj upazila named Matizan Begum claimed that she and the other five members of her family had been struggling to get by each day. Her husband used to eat out of his hand and was a day laborer.
In that circumstance, she began raising sheep on the open char area and growing vegetables on her farmstead using the organization’s assets. She stated that there were now six sheep instead of one, and that she had made money by selling four of them.
She was able to escape poverty after getting involved in money-making activities. She is currently managing her family’s finances without any issues.
