Mohammad Zahangir Alam’s nomination for mayor of Gazipur City Corporation has been revoked, and his nomination paper has been canceled. Zahangir is a debt defaulter, according to the election’s returning officer, Md. Faridul Islam, who revoked the nomination.
Asked why Zahangir’s nomination was withdrawn, Faridul responded, “We have evidence from Bangladesh Bank’s Credit Evidence Bureau (CIB) that Zahangir is a loan defaulter. As a guarantor, he started to miss payments on loans.
Zahangir turned in his paperwork to run as an independent for mayor on April 27. His mother Zaida Khatun, who was also running for mayor, had her candidacy papers sent in as well. Zaida’s nomination was still accepted by the returning officer.
In the meantime, the Election Commission convened a press conference regarding this at the Returning Officer’s office in Gazipur. Zahangir was there when it happened.
Speaking to the media, Zahangir said he would appeal the EC’s decision to cancel his nomination because he had not received justice. He declared, “I mortgaged my own land for charitable purposes to safeguard an industrial facility. I didn’t take the cash, and the business is covering the loan.
However, he argued that it was undemocratic for his nomination to be withdrawn. Additionally, Zahangir asserted that the EC did not treat him with “fairness and justice.”
The previous mayor of the GCC declared, “The Election Commission has strayed from its impartial position. I’m not sure why they did it in response to an invisible pressure.”
I seek justice. If necessary, I’ll move to the High Court and Supreme Court,” he declared. Although all of the documents, according to Zahangir, were submitted via the lawyer and bank officials, the EC canceled his nomination paper, citing the CID.
