The nation is celebrating Buddha Purnima, the largest religious festival of the Buddhist community. Gautama Buddha’s birth, enlightenment, and demise are commemorated on Buddha Purnima.
Buddha was born on this date in 563 BC at Kapilabastu, a city at the foot of the Himalayas. He first entered “nirvana” at the age of 35 and finally left it at the age of 80 in 483 BC.
Bangladesh observes a public holiday on this day. Both Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and President Mohammed Shahabuddin sent greetings to the Buddhist community on this special day in separate messages.
According to President Shahabuddin, Bengali society and Buddhist culture have been closely entwined since ancient times. Its prominent examples include Mainamati Shalban Bihar and Paharpur.
He asserted that Gautam Buddha constantly sought the benefit of people and made every effort to create a peaceful and prosperous world.
President Shahabuddin stated, “We hope that the Buddhist community will continue its efforts for the development of the nation by upholding this tradition and this wonderful tradition of the Buddha.”
The prime minister urged everyone to work together in the future to further solidify the custom and bond of harmony in Bangladesh.
In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stated that “Following the teachings of Buddha in today’s world is necessary to suppress the brute forces motivated by violence, prevent the degradation of values, and build a peaceful society.”
She expressed her wish that everyone will contribute to making Bangladesh a peaceful nation by supporting and fostering Gautam Buddha’s values.
