Metropolis Report-

President Mohammad Shahabuddin has been granted permission by the Supreme Court’s Appellate Division to continue serving as the nation’s leader.

A leave to appeal plea filed by SC attorney MA Aziz Khan asking the Appellate Division to declare the position of president void and hold new elections for the position was denied by an eight-member panel chaired by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique.

The top court also assessed petitioner MA Aziz Khan a fee of Tk 1 lakh for bringing such a case before this court. Since the complete wording of the SC order had not yet been made public, details were not available.

MA Aziz Khan stated that he is unsure of the rationale for the Appellate Division’s imposition of the Tk 1 lakh fee. After hearing the complete wording of the SC order, he declared that he will decide the next course of action.

Aziz Khan recently filed the leave to appeal case with the SC after its chamber judge affirmed a High Court decision upholding the dismissal of a writ suit challenging the legitimacy of the election of Shahabuddin as president on March 15.

The term of outgoing president Abdul Hamid ended on April 24, and freedom fighter and politician Mohammed Shahabuddin was sworn in as Bangladesh’s 22nd president that day.
