SC upholds DU Bangla dept’s decision in keeping students’ faces uncovered

Metropolis Report-

The Bangla department of Dhaka University asked its students to uncover their faces and ears, during exams and presentations. The Supreme Court on Monday upheld that.

A High Court decision that had stopped the department’s December 11th notification from taking effect was overturned by the SC Appellate Division.

However, the top court ordered the HC to hear and decide the rule within two months. The rule required the relevant authorities to provide justifications for not declaring the department’s action illegal.

Following a plea for leave to appeal submitted by the Bangla department contesting the HC judgment, a full bench of the Appellate Division led by Justice Md Nuruzzaman issued the ruling.

According to the highest court’s directive, the students in the department can be identified during exams, according to the writ petitioners’ attorney Faizullah Faiz.

At the hearing, Attorney General AM Amin Uddin represented the DU Bangla department, and attorney Belayet Hossain spoke on behalf of the writ petitioners.

In response to a writ petition submitted by three department students, the HC on March 28 suspended the notice’s effectiveness for six months and also issued a rule requesting the relevant authorities to justify why the department’s action should not be deemed illegal.
