Payra Power Plant to Remain Closed For At Least 20 to 25 Days

Metropolis Report –

Due to an ongoing coal shortage, the second unit of the Payra 1,320 MW Thermal Power Plant Project will shut down on Monday, June 5.

Prior to that, the project’s first unit shut down on May 25, having a substantial influence on the southern and some central regions of Bangladesh’s electricity supply crisis.

“Coal import initiatives have advanced significantly”. After opening a Solar Electricity Laboratory and Training Center at Daffodil International University in Savar’s Birulia, he expressed his hope that Payra may restart power delivery as of June 25.

The power plant, a joint venture between China and Bangladesh, started operating commercially in 2020. To fuel the plant, China National Machinery Import and Export Company (CMC) provided loans for the purchase of coal from Indonesia.

The interruption in coal supply came about when CMC delayed paying 390 million US dollars in unpaid obligations for coal supplies until April.

However, according to Shah Abdul Moula, Plant Manager of the Payra 1320 MW TPP, the import of coal is underway as a result of a settlement of almost 90 million US dollars from unpaid invoices.
