India’s Under-Construction Bridge Second Collapse in a Year

The second time the structure has crashed in a year, an Indian state government on Monday ordered an investigation into the weekend collapse of a portion of a bridge that was still being built over the Ganges River.

When roughly 250 meters (820 feet) of the concrete surface linking the pillars fell into the river on Sunday, there were no injuries recorded and neither people nor vehicles were moving across the bridge.

Nitish Kumar, the head of the Bihar state’s elected body, declared in a statement that “those found guilty will not be spared.” In April of last year, a section of the bridge on the opposite side collapsed.

Long-standing safety issues in India’s infrastructure have occasionally resulted in catastrophic accidents on highways and bridges. To save money, contractors frequently use subpar materials for building.

The opposition party in the state, the Bharatiya Janata Party, condemned the bridge fall. The state government is headed by Kumar’s regional party, the Janata Dal-United (People’s Party).

Shehzad Poonwalla, a spokesman for the BJP, called it “the bridge of corruption.”

The 3.6 kilometers (1.9 miles) long bridge, which would have connected the town of Bhagalpur with Khagaria, around 250 kilometers (155 miles) east of Patna, the state capital, was supposed to be opened later this year but was delayed due to construction issues. A private company was constructing it for a price of 17 billion rupees ($208 million).
