Metropolis Report-
Similar to the recent closure of the Payra Thermal Power Plant due to coal shortages, the 1320 MW coal-based Banshkhali power plant owned by S Alam Group has been forced to shut down.
Following a request from the Power Development Board following the shutdown of the Payra power plant, the SS Power Plant, located in the Gondamara area of the Banshkhali upazila in Chattogram, began producing electricity on June 4th.
But according to Md Faizur Rahman, site project manager and DPD of SS Power, after only four days of operation, the plant stopped producing energy at 10:45 pm on Thursday (8 June) due to a coal shortage.
The Banshkhali power station supplied the national grid with 300–375 MW of electricity before its closing. On May 24, one of the two units of the SS Power Plant started experimentally sending electricity to the national grid.
The electrical supply to the southern part of Bangladesh and a piece of central Bangladesh had already been severely disrupted by the closing of the first unit of the Payra Thermal Power Plant on May 25. Due to the continued coal scarcity problem, the second unit of the Payra power plant was also shut down on June 5.
