North Korea Starts a Key Party Meeting to Discuss Economy and Defense Plans

Metropolis Desk-

Reports state that North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un attended the opening of a significant political meeting to address strengthening the nation’s failing economy and reviewing security plans in light of rising rivalry.

The Workers’ Party Central Committee’s expanded plenary meeting took place as the United States sent a nuclear-powered submarine to South Korea as part of the allies’ most recent show of force against the North, which has been testing nuclear-capable missiles at an unprecedented rate lately.

Party officials assessed the country’s economic initiatives for the first half of 2023 and discussed foreign policy and defense strategies to deal with the evolving worldwide situation during the first day of talks on Friday, according to the official Korean Central News Agency of North Korea.

The agency made no note of any discussions or remarks made by Kim. It was stated that the meeting would go on for at least one more day.

A day after North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles into its eastern waters in retaliation for this week’s U.S.-South Korean live-fire drills that took place close to the inter-Korean border, the USS Michigan arrived on Friday in the South Korean port of Busan.

With the deployment of the USS Michigan, the South Korean and American Navy intend to undertake drills aimed at honing their joint combat and special operations skills as part of the allies’ most recent coordinated training to counter the escalating North Korean threat.

The coordinated exercises by the allies have been denounced by Pyongyang as invasion drills. Since the beginning of 2022, North Korea has increased its military demonstrations, including test-firing about 100 missiles, under the guise of the increasing U.S.-South Korean maneuvers. In addition to many shorter-range weapons aimed at South Korea and Japan, the North has tested a new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile this year that is capable of reaching the U.S. mainland.

According to experts, Kim’s aggressive push for weapons has added to the economic isolation of North Korea, which has already been harmed by decades of poor management, crippling U.S.-led sanctions over his nuclear weapons program, and pandemic-related border closures that reduced trade with China, its main ally and economic lifeline.

The North Korean missile launches on Thursday marked the country’s first rocket action since May 31, when a long-range rocket carrying the nation’s first spy satellite fell off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula.

The North Korean missile that crashed has been retrieved, according to the defense ministry of South Korea. The militaries of the United States and South Korea were to examine the wreckage. The white, metal cylinder, which some analysts believed to be the rocket’s fuel tank, was depicted in images released by the ministry.
