Wednesday’s election witnessed the victory of a mayoral candidate sponsored by the ruling party after a lapse of two terms, and Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury performed admirably.
There were conflicting reactions to Anwar receiving the ruling party’s nomination for the Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) election even a day before it took place.
He defeated his nearest challenger, Nazrul Islam Babul of the Jatiya Party, by more than double the number of votes despite being an expatriate and the joint general secretary of the Awami League’s UK unit.
AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, a candidate backed by the Awami League, won the position of mayor of Rajshahi for a third time.
It is his second win in a row in the Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) elections. The candidate sponsored by the Jatiya Party abstained from the unofficial results released yesterday evening.
Notably, the BNP had already abstained from both electronic voting machine (EVM) elections.
However, several party leaders who had just been ousted for disobeying the party’s directive to abstain from voting in city elections were in the elections.
