Environmentalists, academics, and industry professionals highlighted at a seminar the worrisome decline in water sources in Dhaka city that are being indiscriminately taken.
The seminar, titled “Importance of Dhaka’s Ponds and Reservoirs and Responsibility for Conservation,” was organized by the Bangladesh Nature Conservation Alliance (BNCA) and the DIT Pond Conservation Movement of Gendaria.
At least 86 ponds and other water bodies in the city are being taken by the government and non-government organizations, according to the River and Delta Research Centre.
The Rajdhani Unnoyon Kortipokkya (RAJUK) was urged to take decisive action to rescue the remaining ponds and reservoirs.
No water body, regardless of ownership, can be filled up, according to the law. The ponds and other water bodies in Dhaka city can be protected from being seized and vanishing if the RAJUK becomes more active.
