In an effort to keep tomato and green chili costs stable in the market, the government approved their import on Sunday.
The license was granted by the Ministry of Agriculture in light of the commodities’ skyrocketing price trends.
The price of a kilogram of chilies reached a record high of Tk 280–300 on that particular day, representing a weekly increase of 150 percent.
According to sources from the kitchen market, tomatoes have been selling for Tk 120–140 per kilogram for the past three weeks.
11,600 tonnes of green chilies and 55,600 tonnes of tomatoes may be imported, according to a notification from the ministry.
