Due to increased import and local supply, green chili prices in Bangladesh have decreased at both the wholesale and retail levels.
On Monday, the price of this necessary cooking ingredient in Dhaka city was Tk 280–300 per kg, while Tk 180–250 was the price at wholesale.
229 tonnes of green chilies were imported till 4:30 on Monday by private importers. A total of 130 businesses are allowed to import 46,230 tonnes of green chili.
With chili prices skyrocketing, the agriculture ministry began accepting imports on June 26.
Locally grown green chilies are now available in greater supply and can be purchased for Tk 160–180 per kg at retail outlets including Karwanbazar, Shyambazar, and Beribandh, while imported green chilies can be purchased in bulk for Tk 200–250.
If importation continues, prices may fall below Tk 200 per kilogram at the retail level in two or three days. Humayun Kabir Bhuiyan, secretary of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB), attributes the market’s turbulence to inadequate market surveillance and a lack of timely import authorization.
