After completing 65 kilometers of rail-track placement work and the building of significant rail bridges, the Bangladesh Railway (BR) plans to launch the Khulna-Mongla rail link (KMRL) by September.
The project, which has undergone five revisions, is anticipated to have a substantial effect on the train system, boosting freight movement and regional trade with Nepal and Bhutan.
When the KMRL project was initially proposed in 2010 as part of the first Indian Line of Credit, it was confronted with difficulties such as subpar feasibility studies, inadequate consultant selection, and problematic design.
The initial Tk 17.21 billion estimate for the project’s cost was amended to Tk 42.60 billion. The line will have a loop line that is 21.11 kilometers long, eight stations, the 716-meter Rupsha Rail Bridge, and 31 other bridges.
