Both Awami League and BNP are aiming to gather supporters at rallies in the capital on Wednesday to show their strength and popularity.
The BNP will announce its one-point demand for a non-partisan polls-time government, while the ruling All-Party Alliance (AL) plans to hold a massive rally near Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.
Both camps aim to show their strength and popularity before they meet with the European delegation on July 15. Dhaka Metropolitan Police has set 23 conditions for the AL and BNP events to show impartiality.
BNP insiders suggest their leaders may unveil a 31-point state reform proposal at the rally and pledge their actions if voted to power. The AL will counter BNP’s announcement by starting the rally at 3:00 pm. Dhaka units of the AL have taken the initiative to gather several lakh people, with law enforcers on high alert.
The DMP has given two separate letters to the parties with conditions including restricting rallies to designated locations, allowing gatherings no more than two hours before, wrapping events on time, not making provocative speeches, and not using sticks or rods.
Police stations are advised to remain alert and patient in the face of untoward incidents.
