The sporadic allowance payments have prompted postgraduate medical students at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University to protest, calling for an increase in the allowance amount.

On Tuesday, a group of 500 doctors protested in front of the vice chancellor’s office to voice their concerns. There were also third-class and fourth-class hospital personnel present when the doctors demonstrated, and they started yelling anti-protest chants during that time.

A protester named Tanvir stated that they intended to make a three-point demand, but Vice-Chancellor Md Sharfuddin chose to remain in his office rather than pay attention to what they had to say.

The postgraduate trainee doctors’ allowances were increased from Tk20,000 to Tk50,000 as part of our requests, which also included regularizing the payments of these allowances and paying off any outstanding debts.

“However, the vice chancellor is staying inside. He instead dispatched his third- and fourth-class workers, who are yelling epithets at us. They’re attempting to frighten us into making a hasty decision.

Five medical professionals entered the building at around 2:00 PM to meet the vice-chancellor. But according to another protester, Habibur Rahman Sohag, they were confronted with threats rather than words of assurance.

We were scheduled to travel in a party of 20 to the vice-chancellor’s room. But when five of us crammed in, the gate was locked. There were at least 60 persons in the room, including authorities and staff.

If we don’t start working again, they’ve threatened to drop us from our classes. Vice-chancellor is making every effort to steer the conversation away from the current problem. Even worse, he claimed we belonged to Islami Chhatra Shibir and Jamaat-e-Islami.

The Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons, or BCPS, spoke with us. We received their word that they would consider it. To begin a strike, we’ll hold off until June 15th.

In a later statement, Sharfuddin stated: “The matter has been handled, and we will provide further information in a press release. Doctors who are protesting want their pay to be increased. If the government permits it, we will comply once we have discussed it.
