According to official media, a rural township in China’s dry northwest experienced temperatures of more than 52 Celsius (126 Fahrenheit) on Sunday, breaking a record for a nation that was dealing with minus 50C weather only six months before.

State-run Xinjiang Daily said on Monday that temperatures at Sanbao township in the Turpan Depression of Xinjiang rose as high as 52.2C on Sunday, with the record heat likely to last for at least another five days.

The previous record was 50.3C, set in 2015 at Ayding in the depression, a sizable region of dunes and dried-up lakes more than 150 m (492 ft) below sea level. The temperature on Sunday shattered that record.

Asia-Pacific nations have experienced three rounds of record-breaking heat since April, raising questions about their capacity to adjust to a fast-changing climate. According to climate experts, the goal of limiting long-term global warming to 1.5C is becoming increasingly improbable.

Power networks and crops in China have been tested by extended hot spells, and worries are growing about a potential repetition of last year’s drought, which was the worst in 60 years.

Dramatic seasonal temperature variations are nothing new in China, but they are becoming larger.

According to the local weather bureau, Mohe’s temperature on January 22 dropped to minus 53 degrees Celsius, breaking China’s previous record of minus 52.3 degrees Celsius from 1969. Mohe is a city in the northeastern Heilongjiang province.

Since then, the nation’s granary region in central China has been devastated by the biggest rains in a decade, which have destroyed wheat fields there.

With John Kerry, the U.S. special envoy for climate change, meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xie Zhenhua in Beijing this week, the two countries hope to revive their efforts to combat global warming.
