The 72km Akhaura-Laksam stretch, where dual-gauge double rail lines were erected as part of a Tk 6,504.54 crore project, was officially opened by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today. At 11:10 a.m., she virtually opened the Dhaka-Chattogram rail link’s segment at the Gono Bhaban.
As the country’s first rail track to be entirely double-lined, the inauguration of this stretch will significantly improve train connectivity between Dhaka and Chattogram.
The remaining 321 kilometers of the track between the capital and the port cities have already undergone the double-line conversion.
After the stretch is opened, Bangladesh Railway officials claim that the distance between the two cities will be covered in one hour less time. When the Akhaura-Laksam segment was the only one in the entire corridor that wasn’t double-lined, train trips on this route took longer.
