Metropolis Desk-
On July 29, the first unit of the 600 MW Matarbari Power Plant in Moheshkhali is scheduled to begin a trial run. To start normal production, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is anticipated to commission the facility in December of this year.
With support from Japan, the facility is one of the government’s megaprojects and is expected to cost Tk 518 billion. Every day, the factory needs 10,000 tonnes of coal, with 5,000 tonnes needed for each unit.
Along with two jetties for direct coal ship unloading, four tanks with a combined storage capacity of 1.7 million tonnes have been constructed.
At a cost of Tk 520 billion, the facility is being built on 1,608 acres of land in the Maheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar district.
The project is being carried out by the Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCL). With two jetties and four coal storage tanks, the plant’s construction is virtually complete.
The project has a coal yard for storing coal and two separate ash ponds. The Bangladeshi government and JICA inked a credit arrangement in 2014.
