An international summit on preserving the Amazon rainforest will take place in Belém, Brazil, over the course of two days.
Representatives from all eight members of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO), including French Guiana, Brazil, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, Suriname, Ecuador, Suriname, and Guyana, are anticipated to attend. Increased regional legislative cooperation on environmental protections for the world’s largest rainforest as well as improved protections for indigenous peoples and environmental activists are among the summit’s main objectives.
The Escazu Agreement, for example, established residents’ rights to access environmental data and information about the rainforest. Only three ACTO members have accepted the pact, with Colombia still working on it. The deal was just forwarded to Congress for ratification by Brazil, which controls the greatest portion of the Amazon.
The slow pace of international agreements like Escazu shows the obstacles to success, despite the efforts made by Brazilian President Lula De Silva to show his dedication to environmental conservation.
The prospect of a concrete ACTO agreement by the end of the single two-day summit is extremely improbable, despite Lula’s claim that representatives in Belém would try to develop a common policy for the first time to safeguard the Amazon. Instead of an actual plan of action, anticipate that participants will simply agree on some action areas.
