Bangladesh has abstained from joining the China-sponsored Indian Ocean Regional Forum due to geopolitical issues that require further examination.
The decision was made after China requested Bangladesh to join the forum, which is part of China’s Global Development Initiatives and connected to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Bangladesh is a member of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (Iora), an intergovernmental organization promoting regional cooperation and sustainable development among countries bordering the Indian Ocean.
Bangladesh’s foreign ministry official argued that joining the forum is China’s counter initiative to strengthen its position in the Indian Ocean region, which is crucial considering seaborne trade.
Prof Mustafizur Rahman, a distinguished fellow of the Centre for Policy Dialogue, highlighted China’s geostrategic interest in initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative, maritime endeavors, and the Silk Route.
Bangladesh could consider engaging with multiple forums with an open mind, as long as there are no conflicting interests.
