By the end of 2023, the government aims to shut down six diesel-fired power facilities with a combined capacity of around 1000 MW.
These facilities are owned by four private businesses: 300 MW by Bangla Track, 200 MW by Aggreko, 300 MW by APR Energy in Pangaon, and 200 MW by Paramount at Baghabari.
The government will save almost Tk2,250 crore annually by retiring all six units.
The country’s total grid-connected generation capacity is 22,482 MW, with diesel-fired plants contributing 1290 MW or 5.7% of the total capacity.
The production cost of diesel-fired power plants is expected to be higher in 2023-24 due to increased US dollar rates and diesel prices.
Energy expert Dr. M Tamim welcomed the retirement of diesel-fired power plants, stating it was “meaningless to keep the costly plants in the system.”
