According to the BBC, some customers of the Bank of Ireland rushed there to use ATMs to withdraw huge sums of money even though they did not have enough money in their accounts. This was caused by an unanticipated technical issue. On August 15, numerous images and videos showing lengthy lines outside of ATMs across the nation appeared on social media.
Although the Bank of Ireland claimed to have a daily withdrawal cap of 500 Euros, some users claimed to be able to withdraw up to double that amount. The Telegraph said that a few users with low accounts were able to withdraw 1,000 euros in cash.
The Irish Times stated that the Garda, Ireland’s national police, were dispatched to several places to control the situation by preventing cash withdrawals and redistributing the lines.
The bank said it had technical troubles following the commotion, but on Wednesday morning it declared the problems were fixed. The bank announced in a tweet that the 365 Online Banking services and the app were now operational once more.
Customers were also warned by the bank that money will be deducted from their accounts if they transferred or withdrew more than their usual limitations.
We are aware that due to a technical error, some clients were able to withdraw or transfer amounts over their permitted limits. The accounts of the customers will be updated with these transfers and withdrawals right away. We encourage any of our customers to get in touch with us if they think they might be in financial trouble as a result of overdrawing their accounts.
