Sudan Military Chief Travels to Egypt for the First Time Since the Conflict

Metropolis Desk-

In his first journey outside of Sudan since the nation descended into a bloody conflict this year, Sudan’s senior military officer visited Egypt on Tuesday and spoke with its president, according to the authorities.

According to the ruling Sovereign Council, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met General Abdel-Fattah Burhan at the airport when he landed in the Mediterranean city of Alamein.

To protect “the sovereignty, integrity of Sudanese State,” the two leaders discussed ways to put an end to the turmoil in Sudan, according to a statement from Egypt. The statement only provided broad strokes of the conflict.

When simmering tensions between the military, led by Burhan, and the potent paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, led by Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, erupted into open combat in the country’s capital, Khartoum, and elsewhere, Sudan descended into anarchy.

The RSF now controls large portions of the city, turning the capital into an urban battlefield. One of the focal points of the controversy has allegedly been the military headquarters, where Burhan has been stationed since April.

Burhan asserted in public remarks to Egyptian media that the RSF started the conflict to seize control of the nation.

He claimed that the rebel factions responsible for the disastrous conflict had perpetrated “heinous crimes that amount to war crimes.”

Until “fair and free elections,” the military has attempted to put an end to the fighting and create a transitional period.

Acting Foreign Minister Ali Al-Sadiq, General Ahmed Ibrahim Mufadel, the head of the General Intelligence Authority, and other military commanders followed Burhan to Egypt.

Last week, Burhan was able to escape the military headquarters. In addition to other locations around the nation, he went to military facilities in Omdurman, a sister city of Khartoum. From the Red Sea port city of Port Sudan, Burhan departed for Egypt.

No side has been able to seize control of Khartoum or other crucial regions of the nation despite months of warfare. Large explosions and plumes of black smoke were visible last week over important parts of the metropolis, especially close to the airport.

Egypt has had a long-standing relationship with the top generals and army of Sudan. El-Sisi organized a gathering of Sudan’s neighbors in July and unveiled a strategy for a cease-fire. Several tenuous cease-fires that were mediated by the US and Saudi Arabia have fallen apart.

Many Khartoum citizens lack access to electricity and water, and the nation’s healthcare system is on the verge of collapse.

Some of the deadliest fighting in the conflict took place in the vast region of Darfur, where RSF and other Arab militias were targeting populations of ethnic Africans.

According to activists and local media, fighting erupted earlier this month in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur region, with both sides employing heavy weaponry in highly populated areas.

According to activist Adam Mousa, on August 22, the shelling of Nyala’s Al-Sekka Al-Hadeid neighborhood resulted in the deaths of at least 39 civilians, including women and children.

Mousa, a media representative for the Darfur Bar Association, demanded that the International Criminal Court look into the incident and prosecute those responsible.

The United Nations stated that there were clashes in the regions of West Kordofan and South Kordofan as well.

According to the UN Human Rights office, at least 4,000 people are thought to have died in the battle, but local activists and medical professionals believe the actual death toll is likely much higher.

By the UN Organization for migration, more than 4.6 million people have been uprooted. Among them are more than 3.6 million people who left Sudan for safer locations and more than 1 million more who migrated to neighboring nations.
