On September 7, the foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council and their Japanese counterpart Hayashi Yoshimasa will meet in Riyadh.
The 157th Gulf Ministerial Council meeting will cover a free trade agreement and cooperation on renewable energy sources. Iran’s nuclear program may also be discussed, according to the Japanese Kyodo news agency.
Badr Al-Busaidi, the foreign minister of the Sultanate of Oman, will preside over the meeting, while Jassim Al-Budaiwi, the secretary-general of the GCC Council, will get a briefing from Hayashi.
The foreign ministers of all the GCC member states, or other ministers filling in for them, make up the ministerial council.
Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE make up the GCC.
After visiting the Gulf area in July, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio convened the summit on September 7.
The importance of Japan’s “strategic” alliance with Saudi Arabia, which has steadily expanded over the years to embrace many areas outside oil, was emphasized by him during the journey.
