Charlie Than, Myanmar’s commerce minister, announced to the Russian RIA official news agency in comments published on Sunday that Myanmar has received the first shipment of two Russian Su-30 fighter fighters.
“Two aircraft have already been delivered,” Than said to RIA outside of the Eastern Economic Forum, an annual gathering in Vladivostok, Russia, that aims to promote regional economic cooperation and attract foreign investment.
A contract for the delivery of six Su-30SME fighter jets was signed by Russia and Myanmar in September 2022, according to RIA.
A state-controlled arms exporter in Russia, the Sukhoi Su-30SME multi-role fighter jet is intended for aerial combat, aerial reconnaissance, pilot training, and employment in battle.
Separately, Than informed the Russian TASS state news agency that several bilateral agreements, including ones aimed at boosting tourism between the two nations, will be signed at the East Economic Forum.
Requests for comment from the Russian defense ministry were not immediately fulfilled.
The Russian supply of weaponry is contributing to a conflict that has turned into a catastrophe for Myanmar, according to a warning from the United States that Russia’s support for the country’s military leadership is inappropriate and destabilizing.
Min Aung Hlaing, the leader of the junta, has traveled to Russia numerous times since 2021 and has been awarded an honorary doctorate. The defense minister and senior diplomat of Russia have also visited Myanmar.
