UN Human Rights Commissioner Condemns Instances of Qur’an on Fire

Metropolis Desk-

Volker Turk, the High Commissioner for Human Rights for the United Nations, denounced on Monday the series of events that led to the Holy Qur’an being burned in Europe earlier this year.

Turk urged the “preserving of human dignity” in his words.

His remarks were made in Geneva at the start of the 54th session of the UN Human Rights Council. On October 6, the council is anticipated to examine the Qur’an burning issue.

When copies of the Qur’an were burned or otherwise damaged during protests in Denmark and Sweden in July, Muslim nations expressed indignation and urged that the Nordic governments put an end to the burnings.

The UN Human Rights Council is also anticipated to debate several human rights issues, including xenophobia and associated kinds of intolerance, among other human rights-related matters, as well as religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination.
