During a significant escalation between neighboring Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius warned on Thursday against removing the long-standing UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon.
Reporters on board the German corvette Oldenburg, which is deployed to the UN mission and was anchored at Beirut’s harbor, were informed by him that a decrease or evacuation of the UNIFIL force would be the wrong signal presently.
The United Nations resolution that ended the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah conflict in southern Lebanon enlarged UNIFIL, which has been functioning in Lebanon since 1978 to uphold peace along the border with Israel.
