Russia Requests New Security Council Meeting on Israel-Palestine Conflict

Metropolis Desk-

As stated on Saturday by Russia’s deputy UN envoy, the country plans to reconvene the UN Security Council to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Monday saw the call for a war conference by Russia. Four council members, including the US, opposed the ceasefire resolution and pointed out that it omitted any reference to Hamas. Nevertheless, the resolution failed.

“We will undoubtedly call another Security Council meeting. Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s deputy permanent representative to the UN, said, “As experience has shown, nobody else dares to do so.”

He did not specify the date of the Security Council meeting, which would be held in Russia, one of the five permanent members.

“Regarding a resolution, I don’t know how fast we’ll get to the next stage of trying to pass a resolution,” he said.

He was talking on the Solovyov Live TV channel during an interview.

Russia has been calling for negotiations to end the war on several occasions, raising the possibility that this might damage its expanding relations with Iran and exacerbate tensions with its longstanding ally Israel.

Earlier this week, President Vladimir Putin had conversations with Iranian and Arab leaders, as well as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to begin peace negotiations.

At least 1,400 people were killed when Hamas militants invaded Israel from the Gaza Strip on October 7, according to Israeli officials. The majority of the victims were civilians who were shot, disfigured, or burned to death on the first day of the raid. Before its forces retook control of the region under attack, Israel claimed that some 1,500 Hamas fighters were killed in the fighting.

The most recent death toll from the Gaza-based Hamas health ministry is over 3,700 Palestinians, most of them civilians, as a result of continuous Israeli bombardment in reprisal for the attacks by the Palestinian Islamist militant group.

The end of Sukkot, a religious festival, coincided with the greatest attack on civilians in Israel’s 75-year history.
