Officials said on Tuesday that 41 men who have been trapped in a collapsed road tunnel for 17 days are only five meters from being reached by Indian rescue teams working by hand. They predicted a breakthrough “soon.”
Chief Minister of Uttarakhand state Pushkar Singh Dhami told reporters at the scene, “The escape passage has been prepared up to 52 meters (170 feet) inside the tunnel, and passage will breakthrough at 57 meters (187 feet) … the rescue operation is expected to be completed soon,” without providing a specific timeline.
