Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called Jordan’s King Abdullah II on Friday, urging international pressure for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, according to official media.
The monarch, according to the Petra news agency, “stressed the importance of protecting civilians and increasing humanitarian aid for Gaza, while guaranteeing its sustained delivery, noting Jordan’s efforts in this regard.”
The King of Jordan reaffirmed that his nation opposes any attempt to drive out Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank through force, and he urged the international community to support the fight against violent extremist settler groups in the West Bank.
In addition to saying that the only path to “create a political horizon that leads to just and comprehensive peace based on a two-state solution,” King Abdullah “reiterated that security and military solutions can never bring peace.”
As Israeli tanks advanced through the central Gaza Strip on Friday, tens of thousands of Palestinians who were fleeing the area sought refuge. Over 180 people were reportedly killed in 24 hours of airstrikes and artillery barrages on the beleaguered enclave.
Since the conflict started on October 7 in response to a surprise attack by Hamas militants on southern Israel that resulted in the deaths of 1,200 people and the seizure of 240 hostages, the total number of deaths in Gaza has reached 21,507, or nearly 1% of the population.
The 2.3 million people living in the besieged territory have almost all been forced to leave their homes—some more than once—and thousands more bodies are rumored to be buried beneath the ruins of several neighborhoods.
