52 people have died as a result of flash floods and mudslides in the West Sumatra region of Indonesia, and over 3,000 people have been evacuated, according to authorities on Tuesday.
Strong rain on Saturday night caused three districts in the province of West Sumatra to experience flash floods, landslides, and cool lava flows, which are composed of volcanic ash, rock fragments, and water and resemble mud. 43 people had died as of Monday.
Mount Marapi, one of Sumatra’s most active volcanoes, was the source of the icy lava flow, known as a lahar in Indonesia. When Marapi erupted in December, at than twenty individuals were murdered. Ever subsequently, there have been several eruptions.
West Sumatra disaster agency official Ilham Wahab stated that over 45 of the 52 fatalities have been identified. In addition, he said, local rescuers, law enforcement, and the military will keep looking for the remaining 17 persons who are missing.
Ilham reported that the majority of the main highways in the three districts, together with 249 dwellings and 225 hectares (556 acres) of land, including rice fields, were devastated. After Sunday, the flooding has subsided.
“Besides searching for the missing persons, we will focus on cleaning the main roads from the mud, logs, and large rocks brought by the floods onto roads and settlements,” Ilham told reporters.
3,396 people had been evacuated to neighboring buildings as of Tuesday, according to a statement from Suharyanto, the chairman of the BNPB, the national disaster and management agency.
According to Suharyanto, who goes under one name like many Indonesians, BNPB has given out food, tents, blankets, hygiene kits, portable toilets, and water purifiers.
He claimed that the majority of the roads were blocked by mud and debris, which has hindered delivery.
