Local activists claim that the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces raided a community in Gezira State on Wednesday, killing at least one hundred people.
If verified, the assault would be the most recent in a series of several hundred that RSF soldiers have launched against farming state’s tiny villages since their takeover of Wad Madani, the capital, in December.
In order to confirm the death toll, Reuters was unable to quickly contact residents or medics due to a telecommunications blackout.
The Wad Madani Resistance Committee, an organization that supports democracy, posted a statement on social media late on Wednesday stating that “Wad Alnoura village… witnessed a genocide on Wednesday after the RSF attacked twice, killing up to 100 people.”
Subsequently, it claimed that the army in Sudan had ignored a plea for assistance and put the death toll in the hundreds.
Following disagreements over the unification of the two forces, the RSF started battling the army in April 2023. Since then, they have taken control of most of western Sudan and the capital city of Khartoum. It is currently attempting to move toward the center as reports from United Nations organizations state that the people of Sudan face “imminently risk of famine.”
The RSF claimed to have assaulted army and affiliated militia bases near Wad Alnoura in a statement on Wednesday, although it made no mention of any civilian casualties.
However, the Wad Madani Resistance Committee charged it with stealing, attacking villagers with heavy artillery, and forcing women and children to flee to the nearby town of Managil.
It featured images of numerous corpses, all wrapped up for burial, surrounded by sizable groups of men in an open plaza.
The committee stated, “The people of Wad Alnoura called on the army to rescue them, but they shamefully did not respond.”
The attack was denounced by the army-aligned Transitional Sovereign Council.
It added in a statement, “These are criminal acts that reflect the systematic behavior of these militias in targeting civilians.”
