The UN children’s agency, UNICEF, has expressed its sincere concern for the 772,000 children in northeastern Bangladesh who have been impacted by flash floods.
The organization stated in a statement on Friday that “children are the most vulnerable as waters rise, facing heightened risks of drowning, malnutrition, deadly waterborne diseases, the trauma of displacement, and potential abuse in overcrowded shelters.”
“During this trying period, Child Protection Social Workers are providing counseling to help children overcome trauma and support to lessen the likelihood of violence.
These kids, out of the more than 2 million impacted by the floods, urgently require relief, according to UNICEF.
The organization claims to have given out over 3,000 10-liter water bottles and over 100,000 people with safe water over the course of five days in collaboration with the local government and others.
It stated, “In the event that the situation gets worse, we are bringing in additional emergency supplies to the affected communities immediately.”
UNICEF said that about 500 government schools in the Sylhet Division are being used as flood shelters after over 810 of them were inundated. The floodwater has also had an impact on around 140 community clinics.
“The situation is expected to worsen over the next 24 to 48 hours, with the rivers flowing at dangerously high levels.”
