Inflation Eases Slightly to 10.49% in August

After the turmoil surrounding the Anti-discrimination Student Movement drove prices sky-high in the first month of the new fiscal year, August has seen a minor improvement in the inflation rate.

Nevertheless, the nation’s devastating floods, massive riots, and breakdown in law and order have kept inflation in double digits for an additional month.

August’s overall price inflation was 10.49 percent, a marginal decrease from July’s 11.66 percent.

Officially, the preceding fiscal year’s inflation was 9.92 percent, slightly below the two-digit threshold. In June, it was 9.72 percent.

The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics released its most recent inflation numbers on Sunday.

In July, inflation had increased overall due to rising food prices. August saw a decrease in food inflation from 14.10 percent in July to 11.36 percent, while non-food inflation increased somewhat from 9.68 percent to 9.74 percent. In June, non-food inflation was 7.95 percent, while food inflation was 12.54 percent.
