After a Decade, Kashmir Holds Assembly Elections

A local government official in Jammu and Kashmir, which is under Indian control, confirmed that voting started there on Wednesday.

In the first phase, voting in up to 24 Assembly constituencies will continue until 6:00 p.m. local time. He said that the region had ninety Assembly constituencies in all.

According to Xinhua, long lines of people with voter identity cards were observed waiting to cast ballots.

The area was holding assembly elections after a ten-year break.

Over 2.3 million electors were eligible to vote across seven districts, according to an online media report by Hindustan Times that cited official figures.

Eight of the 24 Assembly constituencies that will cast ballots on Wednesday are located in the Jammu region’s Doda, Ramban, and Kishtwar districts, and sixteen are located in the Kashmir region’s Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian, and Kulgam districts.
