Chief Advisor Yunus Calls for Quick Reforms and Swift Elections: NHK Reports

The interim government’s chief advisor, Muhammad Yunus, has stated that he is determined to push for reforms and call a poll as soon as possible, according to NHK.

Yunus made the comments while visiting the United States for the 79th United Nations General Assembly, in an interview with NHK in New York.

During the interview, Yunus stated that the government will call an election as soon as it is prepared, and that the interim government’s duty is to implement reforms as soon as possible. “Failure is not something that we can accept,” he declared.

In reference to the students who were instrumental in toppling the Sheikh Hasina government, Yunus declared that youth sacrificed their lives for a “revolution” and promised to involve the next generation in the formulation of public policy.

Yunus stated that Bangladesh is anticipating assistance from Japan, its largest donor, “during this very critical period.” He emphasized that Japan’s assistance is critical to helping democracy establish itself and rebuilding his country’s economy.

On August 8, three days after Hasina resigned as prime minister in the face of a student-led mass movement, Yunus assumed leadership of the temporary administration. Hasina had served in that capacity for 15 years.
