The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has taken Abdullah Al Islam Jakob, the MP for Bhola-4 and a former deputy minister, into custody.
In response to a complaint submitted to the Savar Model Police Station, Jakob was taken into custody in Gulshan, according to a statement released by the DMP on Tuesday.
In the Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate’s court, former Bhola-4 MP Nazim Uddin Alam filed accusations against Jakob and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina regarding an incident from 2012 in which BNP activists were shot at.
After hearing the plaintiff’s testimony, Magistrate SM Saiful Islam gave the Savar Model Police Station instructions to look into the incident.
According to the case files, on December 9, 2012, Nazim and other BNP activists were participating in a blockade operation on the Amin Bazar Bridge when police attacked them with batons and started shooting at them. According to Nazim, the event resulted in the shooting of over fifty BNP activists.
Hasina and Jakob were not the only people accused in this case; other defendants included Mohiuddin Khan Alamgri, the home minister at the time, IGP Hasan Mahmud Khondker, Dhaka Range DIG SM Mahfuzul Haque Nuruzzaman, Superintendent of Police Habibur Rahman, and OC Asaduzzaman of Savar Model Police Station.
Jakob won three seats in parliament in the ninth, tenth, and eleventh general elections. He was the deputy environment and forest minister.
In addition, he was a member of the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources’ and the Ministry of Water Resources’ parliamentary standing committees.
Jakob’s father, MM Nazrul Islam, served as Charfason College’s founding principal, in addition to being a multiple MP elector.
