Late last night, while the Hindu community was preparing to submerge idols in the Buriganga River, police and locals got into a fistfight in the Patuatuli neighborhood of Old Dhaka.
Three individuals, including a police officer, sustained injuries during the altercation.
Witnesses claimed that miscreants threw bricks at the people who were going to submerge idols in the Buriganga from the rooftop of Nur Super Market.
Local Hindus attempted to enter the market after the attack, but police resisted, and a fight broke out between them.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Kotwali Police Station, Md. Enamul Hasan, provided information about the incident to The Daily Star today. The resident notified him about it at approximately 11:40 p.m.
“I hurried over there right away. The locals made an effort to get into the market. We prevented them from entering for the protection of the market, which ultimately resulted in the altercation. Additionally, I sustained injuries,” the OC said.
“Failing to control the situation, I informed the army, and they arrived and dispersed the crowd,” he stated.
He continued, saying that things are now mostly under control.
