Government Suspends Passport Processing for Former Speaker Shirin Sharmin

The Department of Immigration and Passports reportedly halted the processing of Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury’s application for a general passport due to her involvement in a murder case.

An officer of the Department of Immigration and Passports (DIP) revealed, under condition of anonymity, that they have also halted the processing of her husband Syed Ishtiaq Hossain’s passport application.

The former speaker does not currently possess a passport. The DIP stated that the Awami League government has cancelled her diplomatic passport and those of other officials.

Shirin applied for a general passport after giving up her diplomatic one a month and a half ago. The passport application process takes a long time. Before the applicant receives a passport, it must pass several stages of review. Shirin Sharmin’s application for a general passport, instead of a diplomatic one, is still in the preliminary stage. We have not yet issued her passport.

In response to a question about the issue on bdnews24.com, DIP Director General Maj Gen Nurul Anwar said, “You should regard the Department of Immigration and Passports’ statement as my statement.”

He would not, however, address the alleged halt in the former speaker’s and her husband’s passport processing.
